GOALS FOR A NEW FANNIN SHERIFF’S OFFICE

1. To be a Sheriff that is available to the citizens of Fannin County. The office belongs to you. I want to hear the concerns and ideas of the public. The result that we are looking for here is an office that the citizens are satisfied with and have confidence in when they need it. People should not have to ask themselves "Where is the Sheriff?"

2  . To restore the pride back into the Sheriffs Office, which will result in personnel showing much more desire to be a truly professional law enforcement officer. As your sheriff I will take an active role in the day to day operations of the sheriffs office, which will go a long toward accomplishing this goal.

3.  Require and provide specialized training to officers that enables them to act professionally in a wider range of situations. The quality of the training will not be compromised by attempting to save tax dollars. We want our officers to be trained by the best of the best. I will assure all of you that under my leadership, this will happen. This is one area that we should not substitute quantity for quality. Law enforcement officers act as they are trained. That is the reason for demanding quality training.

4 .Take a more active role in the activities of our circuit wide drug task force. All officers should have extensive training that enables them to identify people who are under the influence of drugs and how to deal with them once they do. As your sheriff, I will make sure that Fannin County does it’s part to make the circuit task force a success and that our officers know what to look for to assist in making arrests. What we will NOT do is branch out on our own and create conflict with a program that is working. Meth is on the decline. This is due to hard work by the circuit task force and they will have my total support. It is a team effort.

5 . Implement policies and procedures in the jail, that are adhered to, that create a facility with minimum liability to the county and keep the inmates in jail.

6 .  Keep our quality law enforcement officers working at home. Our trained law enforcement officers should not be working in Gilmer or Union Counties.

7.Utilize inexpensive technology to better organize patrols. Deputies should be spending their time in areas where crimes are occurring.

8.Provide law enforcement conducted training to citizens that helps them become more aware of signs of criminal activity. Some of the best arrests that officers will ever make come from citizens who are witnessing or have knowledge of a crime. If they have training in law enforcement they are even more useful to officers and courts because they make a much better witness. This is almost like a free way to hire more deputies. Every set of eyes helps. .

My top priority will be to create a professional law enforcement organization that serves the citizens of Fannin County without an added tax burden to maintain it. This list of goals is where I want to start. After reading these goals, you will realize that there is very little expense involved here. What will be required is leadership, experience, and the desire to succeed, which I can assure all of you that I have.

My goals are reasonable and attainable and will make the county safer. We need some new cars and the deputies need to make more money, I think everyone will agree on that. These things will have to be researched to determine the most efficient way to obtain what we need to operate effectively. The local economy is going through some adjustments at the present time which could dictate the availability of funds in the future. Well thought out plans will be required to make sure that our tax dollars are spent wisely and yield maximum results.
